I know this is not exactly about food, but it is food-related…kind of…
I watched the movie ‘Julie & Julia’ yesterday night, and it was a light-hearted story about this woman with a dream – Julie Powell – who was stuck in a dead-end government job, but found joy and release from the pressures of work and everyday life by cooking…
Encouraged by her husband, she started a blog documenting her adventures (or misadventures, in some cases) in going through 524 recipes in 365 days from a book titled ‘Mastering the Art of French Cooking’ by her idol Julia Child…a chef and author who introduced French haute cuisine to America, and made it simple to boot.
Without giving too much away, the movie shuttled back and forth between Julia’s life in the 60s, and Julie’s life in modern times, their struggles, their triumphs, and highlighted certain uncanny similarities between the two. Eventually, her blog gained a huge following and changed her life forever…
Where is this going?
Well, while watching the movie, I did pick up some cooking tips (i.e. how to poach an egg, how to bone a duck, etc). As, as I was watching it, I was thinking about this blog and where it was headed. Instead of plucking random recipes from thin air (and the AFC), I was inspired (kinda) to do something similar (yes, it’s no longer original) and find a classic cookbook from which I can take recipes and try them out, and then write about the experience (with photos of course).
This led to another problem…what would be a classic cookbook? I wasn’t about to use the same book, even though I’m sure it can be found easily…and cookbooks by Jamie Oliver and Nigella Lawson don’t really qualify as classics…
Well, I guess I’ll just have to look around a bit more…and see if I can find the time to work on a similar project as well. It would be nice if something worked out, but I guess such things only happen in movies…
