I took some photos previously for a cookbook that some ladies in my church were doing, as part of an anniversary project. It was interesting, to say the least (i’ll leave that to your own interpretation).

wishing singapore a happy 44th birthday!

Well, well…it is Singapore’s 44th birthday today. Before the day is done, just thought I’d drop a post to commemorate this special day. Got lots of thoughts going through my mind about a middle-aged country and mid-life crisis, but that’s for another post, in another blog.

In honour of this occasion, and in the spirit of keeping with Singapore’s favourite past-time (no, not queueing up for 4D or Toto tickets), allow me to share one of its local favourites with you…mee goreng (or fried noodles, literally translated)!

grilled rib-eye with broccoli & potato salad

I shot my own dinner…which is not quite the same as a woodsman shooting deer for his dinner.

Although I love red meat (i.e. beef, lamb, etc), you know that there is something not quite right when one’s choice for dinner is dictated by what one wants to shoot, photographically speaking (especially when one is supposed to cut down on one’s intake of red meat).

famous malaccan baba chendol and nonya laksa

In sweet treats, the melting pot on July 28, 2009 at 4:40 pm

As part of our annual pilgrimage to Malacca, a group of friends and I always stay at this hotel called Hotel Puri near the famous Jonker Street. It is along Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock, and is actually a traditional Peranakan house/mansion which used to be the home of some famous Malaccan pioneer (whose name eludes me).

Anyhow, like I said, we love staying there because it is near Jonker Street which comes alive on weekend nights because of a night market or ‘pasar malam’ where one can get traditional food, crafts and lots of other things. There is also a pub (Geographer’s Cafe) around the corner which we love for the chill-out factor (although the live music could wake the dead). Most importantly, it is near the famous ‘baba chendol’ which is TO DIE FOR!

chocolate fondant with strawberries

In sweet treats on July 28, 2009 at 12:52 am

First off, I have to include a disclaimer that this absolutely lovely and sinful chocolate fondant wasn’t prepared by me. I had a do at my place to celebrate a friend’s birthday (she had requested my special burgers), and her sister (also a dear friend) made this. I was surprised at how simple it was!

chicken and shrimp skewers with mushroom and peppers

In light bites on July 27, 2009 at 4:50 pm

This was prepared as part of an anniversary dinner. After having prepared food a few times, I wanted to focus more on the styling and presentation. Of course, while taste was paramount (and it wasn’t too shabby, if I may say so myself), this was a first attempt at putting some thought into the food styling and presentation.

grilled salmon with broccoli & sour cream sauce

In the main event on July 25, 2009 at 11:32 pm

Since this is the first post in this blog, I decided to post something I prepared more recently, rather than dig into the archives of photos that I have. Not sure what inspired me to prepare this today. Maybe it was the simple way in which salmon can be prepared…oh yes…i remember now. I watched Jamie Oliver (or was it someone else?) on the Asian Food Channel preparing something with watercress sauce. Just throw in some watercress into a food processor with some sour cream, and voila! Although, in lieu of watercress, i opted to substitute with broccoli. The consistency and texture was nice, but the taste was…well, it tasted like broccoli with sour cream.

Why? What did you expect?
